PITTSFIELD, MA -- "I think it's very unique and very special and I'm just pleased as could be that I have this at my door," said Annee Goodchild.
She's pleased because a local delivery service brings fresh, organic produce right to her doorstep in Pittsfield. The company is called Berkshire Organics. They've only been in business for less than two months. But in that short time, business has blossomed by about 400 percent. The company's owner says rising prices at the grocery store is just one reason why.
"People are just more conscientious of their choices and where they're spending money and they want to support local farms, they want to support those farms that aren't putting chemicals or pesticides in their food or in the ground, and I think people are just also concerned about the rising cost that they're seeing in the grocery stores," said Berkshire Organics owner Aleisha Gibbons.
Selling green vegetables is the goal. But they also go green while working. The company uses a hybrid vehicle to make some deliveries.
"Right now we have over 120 customers and today we're actually doing about 90 deliveries," said Gibbons.
Usually the first question people asked is: am I going to save money? But what may be surprising is that some customers say the service is about more than just dollars and cents.
"I'm doing it because I want to get healthy. I'm doing it because I really like the idea of supporting local farmers," said Goodchild.
"The essence is really to support local farms, to go green, support organic farms, and just be more alert and aware of the types of food that you're eating," said Gibbons.
They're going green, selling green, and lucky for Berkshire Organics, making some green.
